"NEW YORK, Feb 11, 2008 (Thomson Financial via COMTEX News Network) --

Shares of American International Group took a dive Monday to the lowest level seen in nearly 5 years after the insurance company disclosed a sharp increase in the estimated decline in value of super senior credit default swap portfolios.

In a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, AIG said that based on its new way of calculating the fair value of the super senior CDSs in respect of multi-sector collateralized debt obligations of of AIG Financial Products and AIG Trading Group Inc., the gross cumulative decline in valuation during 2007 as of Nov. 30 was $5.96 billion, compared with its previously-disclosed estimate of $1.6 billion.

AIG also said its independent auditors concluded that as of Dec. 31, there was a "material weakness" in internal controls over financial reporting and oversight related to the fair value of super senior CDS portfolios.

The stock, a component of the Dow industrials, slumped 11% to $45.01, the lowest price seen since March 2003. Tomi Kilgore tk1"
